The Natural Facelift (Microcurrent)

The Natural Facelift (Microcurrent)

xfMost people who ask us about a natural facelift are not trying to look younger, exactly. They are trying to look less tired.

There is a real difference between those two things, and it shapes everything about how we approach this treatment.

What microcurrent actually is

Microcurrent uses an extremely low level of electrical current — measured in millionths of an amp, comparable to the currents your body already produces — delivered through two small handheld probes moved across the face.

In skincare, it is used to work the facial muscles: toning them, and improving the appearance of lift and definition along the jawline, cheekbones and brow. It is sometimes called face fitness, which is a fair description of what is happening. You are essentially exercising muscles that otherwise never get worked.

What it feels like

Almost nothing, which surprises people.

At most you will notice a faint tingle, and occasionally a slight metallic taste if we are working near the jaw. There is no heat, no needle, no discomfort and no recovery time. You can go straight back to work, or straight out to dinner.

Most clients find it deeply relaxing. A fair number fall asleep.

What it does — and what it does not

We would rather set expectations properly now than have you disappointed in six weeks.

What microcurrent can do: improve the appearance of firmness and definition, support circulation and lymphatic flow, reduce the look of puffiness, and leave the face looking noticeably more awake. Results build with a series and are visible in photographs.

What it cannot do: replace surgery, produce permanent structural change, or hold indefinitely without maintenance. Anyone promising otherwise is overselling it.

What it is genuinely excellent at is the thing most people actually want — looking rested, defined and like yourself on a good day.

How it compares to injectables

These are different tools solving different problems, and we have no interest in disparaging anyone’s choices.

Injectables relax muscles or add volume. Microcurrent tones muscles and supports the tissue around them. One works by limiting movement; the other works by encouraging it. Some clients do both, timed carefully, and are very happy.

Clients typically choose microcurrent for one of three reasons: they want to look rested rather than altered, they would prefer nothing injected, or they want something that supports skin health at the same time as appearance. If any of those sound like you, it is worth a conversation.

Why it works best as a series

A single session produces a visible result, and it is genuinely excellent before a wedding, a photograph or an event. But it is temporary.

Meaningful change comes from a series — typically ten sessions relatively close together, followed by monthly maintenance. Muscle responds to repetition, which is the same reason one visit to a gym does not change anything but three months of visits does.

We will map out a realistic plan at your consultation, including how much maintenance your particular face is likely to need.

Who it suits

Microcurrent tends to suit people in their forties, fifties and sixties who are noticing softening along the jaw, a loss of definition through the cheekbones, or simply a more tired look that does not match how they feel. It also works well for younger clients wanting to maintain what they have.

It is not appropriate for everyone. Microcurrent should be avoided if you have a pacemaker or any implanted electrical device, if you are pregnant, if you have epilepsy, or if you have an active cancer diagnosis. Please also tell us about metal implants, recent injectables or any current course of treatment, so we can plan safely around them.

What we pair it with

Microcurrent layers well. We frequently combine it with LED light therapy, lymphatic drainage or facial reflexology within the same appointment, depending on what your skin needs on the day. Everything is organic and non-invasive, which is the case across our whole menu.

Frequently asked questions

What is a natural facelift?

A natural facelift is a non-invasive facial treatment that improves the appearance of lift, tone and definition without surgery or injectables. At A Touch of Bliss Organic Spa in West Hartford, it is delivered using microcurrent — a very low-level electrical current that works the facial muscles, often described as face fitness.

Is microcurrent a good alternative to Botox?

They do different things. Injectables relax muscles or add volume, while microcurrent tones muscles and supports the surrounding tissue. Microcurrent tends to suit people who want to look rested rather than altered, or who prefer not to have anything injected. Results are gradual and require maintenance, whereas injectables act faster and last a set period.

Does microcurrent hurt?

No. Most people feel nothing at all, or a faint tingle. There is no heat, no needles and no downtime. Many clients find the treatment relaxing enough to fall asleep during it.

How many microcurrent sessions do you need to see results?

You will see a visible result after a single session, but it is temporary. Lasting change generally requires a series of around ten sessions scheduled relatively close together, followed by monthly maintenance.

How long do microcurrent results last?

A single session lasts a few days. Results from a full series hold considerably longer but are not permanent, since facial muscles gradually return to their previous tone without maintenance. Most clients keep results with one session a month.

Who should not have microcurrent?

Microcurrent should be avoided if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electrical device, if you are pregnant, if you have epilepsy, or if you have an active cancer diagnosis. Tell your provider about metal implants, recent injectables or any ongoing treatment so the session can be planned safely.
